Honda Corporation announced that it has adopted Renesas’ automotive-grade R-Car system-on-chip (SoC) and RH850 MCU for the Honda SENSING Elite system in its March 2021 model “Legend”. The Honda SENSING Elite applies advanced technologies that meet the requirements of Level 3 autonomous driving (conditional autonomous driving in limited areas). Now, Honda has once again selected the R-Car and RH850 for the Honda SENSING 360 omnidirectional safety and driver assistance system. The system is based on expertise gained in previous technical research and development work. The first model equipped with the Honda SENSING 360 is scheduled to be released in China in 2022, followed by a wider range of models.

Additionally, for the next-generation Honda SENSING 360 system, Honda has selected the R-Car S4 as the primary SoC in the ADAS core Electronic control unit (ECU). As a result, Renesas and Honda are expanding their collaboration in the ADAS field to advance safety technologies.

In the advanced Honda SENSING Elite flagship technology system, Renesas’ automotive-grade R-Car SoC processes sensor data from cameras, millimeter-wave radar and lidar, as well as 3D HD maps and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data. The SoC also monitors the vehicle’s location and road conditions and calculates route plans in real time. The RH850 car control MCU supports driving maneuvers and collision avoidance by receiving signals from the R-Car and performing advanced control of acceleration, braking and steering systems.

The application of Honda SENSING 360 is expected to expand globally, and Renesas’ R-Car helps realize a full range of safety and driver assistance systems through 360-degree perception and processing sensor data from cameras and millimeter-wave radars.

Going forward, Renesas will work on collaborative development with Honda to drive wider adoption of the next-generation Honda SENSING system.
